How to be a Player in the Game of the Recoding Industry Tip 01/31/2013 Income Tax Check

This one is strictly for those of you that plan on having a music career and you are expecting an income tax check.

Don’t blow it!

I know those new Jordans look nice or those new Kobes would make a nice addition to your collection but before you start splurging on those ACCESSORIES you might want to stop and look at the NECESSITIES.

Aside from you paying in bulk for household expenses and catching up on a few bills and paying of some loans… lets look at a few options that you could do with that money.

I used to run the Credit Doc LLC. It was a credit repair business; probably the only LEGAL one in Georgia by law. One of the tactics I would counsel clients on would be the importance of hard assets and the usage of credit.

Now I’m not expecting you to buy a house, that will come later but you still need to have a different perspective than what you currently have.

There are a LOT of ways to pay for stuff and in Hip Hop, cash seems to be the default but what if you could take that $3,000 check and turn it into $5-10k in 6-9 months?

You see the $$$ and you look at the now instead of planning ahead and working with the system instead of the system taking from you of what you have.

Here is one strategy to flip, build and establish credit using only a portion of your check.

Take $1,200 of that check and get a $1,000 CD (certificate of deposit) from your bank. Your bank MUST report CDs to the credit bureau, if they do not, this will only help in flipping and building your relationship with your bank and not go all in with your credit, but it is a start. All banks report loans to the bureaus.

After you purchase the CD, get a loan against the CD at the same bank. The CD can be on variable increments, anywhere from 30-90 days is an option; it is your choice. I recommend a 30-45 day CD. The loan will determine how fast you pay it off and it needs to be concurrent with the maturity of the CD. You are not looking at maximum gain from the interest accrued from the CD, you are looking at the loan relationship with the bank. When you get the money for the loan, DO NOT SPEND IT. Put it in a savings account or you could continue to flip the process with smaller CDs under it. It will all be based on the minimum amount your bank allows for the LOAN. Most banks start at $1,000 but in the past I have seen them start at $500.

After doing this at least twice and based on the new history that you just created with the bank and the credit bureau for having positive reports for consecutive months, you bank SHOULD allow you to open up a line of credit WITHOUT the CD as collateral. Now you have the CD to continue to flip as well as the money the bank is about to allow you to use. You have still YET to come out of pocket because the loan amount plus fees is STILL lower than the amount of the matured CD. In fact, after the maturity, they should give you money back.

*warning: Once you begin using the line of credit be prepared for fluctuating rates and variable interest based on usage but in the end you now have some extra $$ to use for your CAREER and you help improve on that messed up credit that you have been ignoring for years.

So what will you do now?

You have hard cash, you have CDs as assets and you have a line of credit, you should be set for a small influx of funding to help you along the way.

Where is your budget and business plan?

You do have a plan right?

You have been keeping track of all expenses right?

Producers for beats, engineers for mixing and mastering, graphic artist for flyers, t-shirts and posters, printers for CDs and other promotional material…where is the book keeping?

PAUSE

You do realize that this is a BIZ-NESS and you need to treat it as such right?

Just because you can rap or humm a few notes does not mean that everything else come easy, because that is a lie.

You need to start budgetizing everything around you.

It is imperative that you use the tools around in order for you to get ahead because it is guaranteed that the industry will use you on an hourly basis and if you are not ready, you will not survive.

Get ready.

Get a plan.

Get a solid business foundation.

Find a budget and start operating your brand like a business instead of acting like a bunch of uneducated star-struck money hungry ninjas; because that is exactly how the industry sees you.

Prove them wrong.

Good luck.

PMatic - Cry Later (Directed by HipStar Hoppings)

American rapper PMatic from Queens NY, began recording music at a very young age. At the age of 13, he signed a production deal with LL Cool J ‘s Rock the Bells production label. Unfortunately, the company failed to launch. However, PMatic is still delivering ground breaking music. With an edgy sound, and a fresh look, PMatic is definitely a “rising star”.

How to be a Player in the Game of the Recording Industry Tip 01/22/2014 “the next”

Today’s tip is dedicated to you label execs and recording industry personnel out there. I get a LOT of music sent to me daily. From time to time someone will call me based on the information that I put in my videos and ask for some advice. One of the consistent topics that come up is “the next”.

You guys are looking for “the next” Migos, “the next” J Cole, “the next” Kendrick. I realize to some it is just a figure of speech but to some, they are actually trying to duplicate that acts entirely.

To the artist that read this, what I am about to say might contradict some of my previous topics somewhat because it will steer from the individuality concept for artist but from a business perspective, it still holds true.

You guys need to stop looking for “the next” as if you think you can copy that formula for success.

YES there is definitely a blueprint for success to get IN the game. But even with that blueprint, there will be various deviations to those tactics, plans and schemes based on the current environment, trends, and taste.

What worked last year for ANY artist on billboard will NOT work EXACTLY or verbatim for someone this year.

The industry doesn’t work like that….

What worked for Chief Keef to get on might now work for your artist.

How August Alsina got in the game might not be the same path that you want your artist to follow.

WHY?

Because there are definites that are constants and those constants are based on each individual act and what THEY bring to the table.

You may have the dopest rapper/singer known to man but you can’t take the Drake/J Cole route to stardom because YOU are not RocNation or YMCMB, You don’t have the staff that they do. You don’t have those years of experience accumulated. You don’t have those levels of networking and relationships that exist to open some doors that others will never get to knock on.

You should NOT spend your time trying to copy what others have done.

You need to focus on what YOU have and assess your strengths and weaknesses accordingly.

You need to do a serious market analysis and see when, where and how is the best time to optimize your budgets, expenditures and time.

At any step of the way you are prone to come up against any number of obstacles, are you ready for them?

Here are a few pointers:

Are you artist insured? ß Serious question there

What happens is something happens to him? Are you able to recoup from selling their existing catalog to cover your assets? You spend more on cars, clothes and drugs but insurance is roughly $150 a month (worst case scenario) for a $100,000 policy. This not only provides peace of mind for you but also for the artist and his family. You can’t control what others do, but you should at least be prepared.

Legalize it!

Make sure you copyright everything that is done monthly under one collection with the Library of Congress. It only cost $65 to copyright a collection. Get the lyrics typed up and send them in electronically. CYA (cover your ass) at all times. Here is the link: http://www.copyright.gov/eco/notice.html

Make a paper trail wherever you go.

If you are working with producers that are NOT inhouse, please make sure you discuss splits (split sheet) and other legalities so that it isn’t a surprise to them later when and/if you decide to distribute the works for commerce. A split sheet at least shows the seriousness of the situation and makes it something tangible for all parties. Handshakes mean NOTHING, you better put it on paper or you might hear your track on the radio with another artist (K.E. on the Track is notorious for this). Use this link to get a basic split sheet for your records http://hiphopencounter.com/?page_id=4331 when it comes time to publish this stuff legally, you can use the split sheets as a base for filing with your publisher.

Keep a receipt.

Along with the split sheets, you better have great bookkeeping. I am sure you have told your artist that EVERY dollar spent on them is recoupable (you get this money back first before they receive any money) but for it to be valid, you need to keep accurate books. Dropping a stack here and there without receipts will amount to nothing later if some sort of contract dispute or a third party gets involved. By keeping accurate records, if Universal approached you about a distribution deal and they wanted to see how much you had vested into the project, you can show dollar for dollar where everything was spent but without it, you loose leverage in negotiating. Download Quicken and start keeping accurate records please, plus it helps with taxes. Your accountant will love you for this, lol.

This post wasn’t intended to belittle or berate what you are currently doing. This was only intended to have you to begin taking this game seriously. As much as I love Hip Hop, I hate the game just as much due to the frivolous and unethical business practices within it.

I beg all of you to begin doing proper business from the top and let it trickle down to your artist and others that you have in your network.

And if you ever come across anyone that says “I don’t sign contracts” or “why we got to be on paper”? ……that is a red flag; run the other direction for the sake of the integrity of your business.

In closing, you need to stop looking for “the next” and focus more so building a viable brand with what you have. You start focusing on “the next” then you are creating a carbon copy of something that already exist thus not allowing your artist to be them. If you want to look at what is NOW, great. But don’t create the mindset that you want to duplicate what others have done, you can’t. It is impossible.

How to be a Player in the Game of the Recording Industry Tip 01/21/2014 God MC

Today’s tip will be personal and it is intended for you to fix your personal life before you focus on the professional life.

I’m sorry but some of you have the worst perspectives on LIFE period. You guys are all over Facebook crying about this and that when you might need to pause on some of that crying for just a minute and think….

This life aint yours to live (let that sink in a bit).

At any given moment you can NOT be here because God said so.

But you would rather spend it complaining about what you don’t have and be envious of what other’s have instead of praising God for allowing your ungrateful simple ass to experience whatever you just went through in the first place.

Life is full of lessons.

Some of you are too stupid to get the lesson. You spend so much time in your feelings that you forget or you become oblivious of what God sent your way in the first place. If life were to be that damn easy then it would be as boring as museum visit and what fun it that?

THAT AINT LIVING!

We go through shit to LIVE.

You are blessed with life, you were blessed with eyes to see and a brain for comprehension to read this post. You could have been born as something else, like an annoying as fly to get swatted or a dung beetle that eats shit, but you were put on this earth as a walking and talking HUMAN BEING.

Quit all that damn complaining and help God…yeah I said it…Help God help YOU to be a better person.

Just because you pray about it doesn’t mean you don’t get up off your ass and go and do something about it too….

Quit all that bitching about ya damn man, fuck that ninja… and move on.

Quit all the complaining about ya job, ninja go find a new one and throw up the deuces to the old one.

Quit showing ya ass on the internet and then you get mad cause you keep attracting men that just want to hit it and quit it, there is some self blame there.

Quit complaining about your health when over the last week you’ve eaten NOTHING that the body benefits from, the body actually works harder to get that poison out of your system (yeah i saw the plates on Instagram BIT)

All this damn complaining and then you have the audacity to dedicate only one status update to church and God but the rest is full of “oh I’m so pitiful”

Fuck that, I’m not coming to your pity party; invitation DENIED!

You owe it to yourself AND God to make the best of every moment of this life that you experience and try and be a blessing TO others before you have your hand out expecting blessings FROM others, especially God.

Check that before God gives you the ultimate check and cashes out.

How to be a Player in the Game of the Recording Industry Tip 01/15/2014 No Dollar$? No sense…

Aint shit “free” in this game.

Let’s get that out there first.

As much as we try and put the wheels in motion, the oil that makes these moving parts in the engine is an expendable resource that we all call ‘money’. When it runs out, just like in a car, you motor will lock up and it will NOT move until it is thoroughly lubricated once again.

You need to start looking at where you will get your oil from because you are the car.

You are the presentation. Your team represents the wheels and different parts of your project is the motor/engine but damn it…without that oil, you will be stuck and not moving. That car is only good for taking pictures, lol.

You can not name ANY artist in the history of music that has EVER moved without it.

Now before you start farting out names of people discovered at talent shows and showcasing events…they still had to get to the location, practice, work on material and even audition at other places before that discovery actually happened and all of that took money.

Most of you have an abundance of God given talent but talent is the least of the 5 factors that go into making a complete project/artist/brand.

  1. you must have the right positive attitude

  2. you have to have an adequate support team

  3. you have to have the inner drive

  4. you need a budget

  5. you have to possess even a moderate level of talent

Some of the above can be created, taught, trained and even faked but along the way without any money to make any of it happen you will be left with an abundance of talent and a closed door staring you in the face.

Start planning now so you can take steps to get to the next level.

These income tax checks are right around the corner.

DO NOT buy another car when you’ve been stealing beats for 3 years…

DO NOT splurge on Versace, Louie and Prada when you still ain’t legal….

Do NOT take your ass to the mall with a band when your CD cover looks like it was done on an etch-a-sketch….

Start planning now in order to excel.

You can not logically think that just having talent alone is the determining factor in you “winning”. You better find that reset button quick and sit on it until you come up with the proper plan, schedule and budget to get you past the tens of thousands of other people plotting on doing the same thing that you are right NOW!

Good luck

How to be a Player in the Game of the Recording Industry Tip 01/14/2014 Legacy!

Today’s post might be a little somber because I lost someone that I knew today. As I sit back reflecting on our interactions I know that they were not all great. We bumped heads a couple times and a few times he had me arrested (I deserved it, lol). But all of this has me thinking…

What is his legacy?

Or to put it directly back at you, what will be YOUR legacy?

Where you are in your career, what will people say about you as an artist, model, musician, etc… when you are no longer walking the earth?

What will you leave behind?

Will everything around you die and be forgotten with your death or will some lasting impressions be left for others to hold close to them as endearing and precious?

I’d like to think that all of us out there are striving to do something on a universal scale to where we are uber famous and spreading joy through music.

Some of you are not thinking on that large of a scale. Some of you want simple things, simple fame…just to be noticed.

That is fine if that is your goal. But even so, what will be your legacy once you are done? Will people remember you as a human being or will they see you through the moments in your music?

Will your music define you as an individual or will it sculpt your career as an artist?

As we begin to plan ahead to be this brand and entity that will one day be bigger than the real person behind it…what will you leave behind once you are gone?

This one might take some thought….
